Death Note: Another Note - The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases -- Roxas

Hello readers, Roxas here covering for Baldr with a review of Another Note. Due to the longevity of the name, I will simply refer to this story as LABB. LABB is not an anime, not a movie, and not even a manga. This story is actually a light novel. The hardcover is only 176 pages, so it's a fairly quick read. And my goodness it is a great read. Since this isn't an anime, I am changing the animation style category to writing style.

Premise - As the title suggests, this story is written in the Death Note universe. If you do not know what Death Note is, you can read my review here, and I also recommend watching the show or reading the manga before you read this. The story is written in a form of pages that Mello wrote. Again, you would not know who this was, had you not have seen the anime or read the manga. Moving on, the pages are about a story that L once told Mello, a story about one of L's toughest cases. The main character of this case is Naomi Misora, who you should remember from Death Note. She is on leave when she gets an offer from the greatest detective in the world. This partnership is also referenced in the anime. When I found out that this was the story of the partnership between these two detectives, I was quite excited. The intriguing murders serve as a proper launch point for this story.

Writing Style - This book was really well-written. Word choice was strong and descriptive, and painted vivid pictures of the scene. The style actually reminds me of my favorite author, Ted Dekker. He mainly writes psychological thrillers about serial killers, and how he writes is quite similar to this story. Trust me when I say this is a very good thing.

Characters - All the characters in this are all interesting and never feel underdeveloped. Misora and her relationships are especially interesting. Even Mello, who I did not like in Death Note, was interesting and well portrayed as the narrator of this story. The parts when BB, the serial killer, is going through his thought processes are quite interesting, and give you a good idea of how messed up he really is. One thing I will say I did not like were some of the names of the characters, specifically the victims. Come on, Believe Bridesmaid? Quarter Queen? Backyard Bottomslash? These names are kind of unbelievable, especially when most everyone else has normal names.

Plot - This plot is a roller coaster of ride. The puzzles set by the killer are quite ingenius, and the solving process is mind-bending.  I will say that some of the conclusions made that end up being right feel like reaches occasionally, but it makes more sense why it was that way towards the end of story. I also like how this story gives some more context to Death Note. For instance, you find out why L started using the name Ryuzaki. LABB also has good philosophical debates, which you'd expect from a story in the Death Note universe. This book also talks about possibilities for other stories about L, stories which sound amazing. Hopefully they will follow through with these stories.

Verdict - In conclusion, this a very well done story that keeps you turning the pages. Although some of the conclusions made feel a bit lame, the end payoff is amazing, and more than makes up for it. If you haven't experienced the story of Death Note, watch or read it, then read this ASAP, because it is most certainly worth reading.

Score - 9/10
